RESUMÉ TIPS

Writing the Winning Resumé

A good resumé alone may not land you the job you want. But a poorly written resumé can prevent you from getting an interview. In addition to the resumé tips below, also see example resumé.

When writing your resumé, focus on the expertise and experience you have relevant to the position for which you are applying. If you are a professional that qualifies for several jobs, you should have different versions of your resumé. Each resumé should highlight your specific strengths as they pertain to that specific job.

All resumés should be accurate and truthful. Since the resumé is the primary tool in obtaining better positions, the extra time you spend perfecting yours is worth it. Here's a short list of Do's and Don'ts when it comes to resumé writing.

DO
  • Do summarize your job description.
  • Do use bullet format where appropriate.
  • Do be brief and concise, limiting the size of your paragraphs.
  • Do revise your resumé to fit the position for which you are applying.
  • Do re-read your resumé before every interview and be prepared to discuss your typical day at previous jobs.
  • Do use action verbs like managed, improves, created, delivered, supervised, etc.
  • Do ensure that your resumé is error free. Ask at least three people to proofread it.
DON'T
  • Don't give reasons for termination or leaving a job on resumé.
  • Don't include information about your physical appearance or health. Don't state your career objectives, unless the resumé is targeted to a specific position.
  • Don't state "References Available Upon Request." Potential employers know to ask for references if they feel they are necessary.
  • Don't include personal information about you, your family, or personal philosophies.
  • Don't include salary information on your resumé. If requested, include it in the cover letter.
